How about at Jamestown?
Good idea, but no sir. The oldest dated stone in Jamestown is like the 1680s or 90s. Not a lot of native stone worth carving. Across the River at Westover Plantation some date back to 1650s but haven’t weathered very well at all.
im just now getting into regency era clothes cause of my nasal snuff habit and the likes of brummel and byron. do you all also make the regency shirts. either with or without the frills and cuffs
No we don’t I’m sorry to say! Try regency revisited
No we don’t. Try regency revisited
What characteristics do you look for in the stones that you carve? How are the stones made flat? Are you looking for softness or grain structure?
Low water absorption rates and longevity proven over the centuries
Wow, I have a million questions.
Great!
Are there any videos showing the complete layout and carving of traditional stone grave markers?
No sir. Trade secrets!
I can assure you fella, nobody is dying to know what type of stone it is.
Nobody is dying to know but some are interested. Maybe not you, but 6,800 people have been interested. That’s enough to justify the video methinks.
Sir, thank you for replying to my first email thanking you for your video. Please, just one more question - I won't become a groupie! The question is, "Can you recommend two or three suppliers of the writing instrument, ink, and papyrus or vellum? Many thanks again. God bless you, Dan
I whittle my own kalamos from River cane. I use Higgins eternal black ink, but tried to make my own with carbon soot and gum Arabic with mixed results
Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Sir, you are my hero! I too read Biblical Greek. I am a 65 years old and a retired man who have lived and worked around the world. My goal in retirement is to pick up this ancient art of calligraphy, so that I can write out the Gospel of Mark on papyrus or vellum and have it bound into a little book. Wonderful, wonderful video!
You can do it brother! I find it very relaxing and rewarding. It also makes me slow down and consider what I am reading and writing. The Lord be glorified!
Love your carvings! How did you become a stone carver? What is Lamson ? Is it the slate? I was just wondering cause my maiden name is Lamison. Was wondering if there was any relation. I myself am starting classes to restore grave markers. Thank you for sharing your gift and your knowledge.
Became a stone carver out if necessity. Had a lot of kin folks with no grave stone! Lamson family carved skates from Charlestown Mass. While restoring gravestones please do not scrub or abrade them ever. Spray D2 and walk away
Look up abbotts creek primative Baptist church davidson county nc. You will like their tombstones.
I am familiar with it. My 6th G Grandfather Benjamin Merrill was a member of that very church! Great stones aren’t they! Thanks
I'm related to Cotton Mather, would like to know where this is, he's my many greats grandfather, and I'll have to check out a local cemetery in a cornfield ,there's 16th century birthdates on some of them here in Southern Indiana!
If you are related to Cotton Mather you have an amazing heritage to be very thankful for. Have you read any of his books or sermons?
@@pumpkintown Just stuff about the witch trials, and when Benjamin Franklin wrote about him in the Silence Dogood letters!
What a fun and interesting trip back in time. So glad to have been able to share this adventure with you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Miss you both!
I recently folded a letter into an envelope using a slightly different method. Differences: I put the seal on the inside, to the left of the signature line. I used a decorative decal to seal the letter on the outside. I haven't heard yet from the recipient regarding whether the letter got through the post; the size of the letter when folded into an envelope was approximately 3" x 4". I have sent letters with a wax seal on the flap, but one was returned with the seal destroyed by the USPS processing machine, so I don't put wax seals of the outside of an envelops anymore....
That’s clever! I am folding these from historical examples before the advent of modern postal processing machines. When I mail these I slip them into bubble mailer envelopes
Michelangelo ❤
Thank you kindly
it's called "grazing light"
Very helpful thank you
Muy bueno!! Saludos desde Argentina
Greetings! Thank you!
I was looking for a more modern fold then I stubbled across this video, sir this is legendary knowledge and I'm gonna make sure to give this a try in the future. I had no clue that Francis Marion had written letters like such and I'm definitely gonna have let my father know about that small nerd fact.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Bro I want to do that that looks awesome
Thank you kindly!
David, we LOVE this video, and your Model A is fantastic! My first car was a 1929 Model A, and my second car, and one I wish I'd never have sold, was a 1932 Model B Ford! If I may offer a suggestion, though: You NEED a period correct stove! And, guess what?!?? I happen to collect camping stoves (the oldest being from 1866!), and I just might have a stove that would fit into your camp perfectly! Though many of the stoves back then just burned gasoline from the campers cars, I would strongly suggest you use Coleman Fuel, as it will keep the stove trouble-free, whilst auto gas will clog up the generator in short order! In any case, if you are interested in talking about the stove, please give me a shout, and I'll tell you what I have in mind for you. Thanks, again, for a great video, and for allowing us all to come along on your trip!! Keep camping, and God Bless! - Every Good Wish, Doc Mark and Sweet Bride
Consider me interested brother!
Very interesting! Mirror trick is great! Do you need a large mirror or (if you don’t have a helper) can you have one half that size and build an adjustable stand for it? I guess a flashlight with a special built holder would be helpful as well. Thank you for sharing your trip.
You certainly could. The bigger the mirror the bigger the area on the stone it will light up though. Flashlights not so good unless after dark in which case you shouldn’t be in a cemetery after dark unless you are allowed to. Great question! Thx
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Will now check out your other videos. God bless. ❤
May the Lord bless you as well
Love the camping setup but you need a period correct camp stove. Not the Coleman propane stove.
Indeed. This is our first setup as described. We all start somewhere. That is something I am working on next Lords willing. Getting the car on the road was my biggest challenge! Thanks Steve
Cute video... The old saying. "All that glitters ain't gold" came to mind when you reported your find at the creek. Especially liked the ol Victrola. His masters voice.
Yes sir all that glitters isn’t gold is right! Thank you for the kind comments
Such a beautiful car! Looks to run perfectly too!
Thank you! First real time out in the car after a 3 year restoration. It still has a long way to go but starting to be functional is a blessing of the Lord!

I just had my first experience on a time machine !!!! Great video! The youth of today should look at this and see how resilient, strong and proud people of the era were.

I never imagined finding a podcast like this ! ! !
What other videos would be of help to you?
@@pumpkintown I'm 68 years old. I grew up in the city of Atlanta and a typical Beaver Cleaver neighborhood in the 1950's and 60's. I often tell people I would not trade my childhood of that era for anything that kids have today. Even though we live in the neighborhood, some of the propertied boxed in land that a house could not be built on and those are the woods the children played in, explored and created. The standard way a boy dressed in the Summer months when they were out playing the South was bare belly, bare foot and cut off jeans. I was Tom Sawyer! I moved away from Atlanta for most of my adult life, but recently move back. I volunteer at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on a regular basis and get to meet thousands of people from all around the world that come to visit the garden. A few years ago I was doing my thing in the Children's Garden for Earth Week. They had set up several 15 gallon plastic bins that they grew carrots and radishes in so the kids could see how they grow and pick them. I was doing a Worm Bin. The tub had lose soil and hundreds of worms in it. The kids could dig through the soil and find a worm. I did that for two days, saw HUNDRES of kids - and not one of them had EVER seen a worm ! ! ! ! What's worse. After going through the Women's Rights movement of the 60's and 70's and inspiring women to stand up and fight for their rights, I'd say almost 80% of the girls would pick up a worm and giggle while it wiggled in their hand. Almost NONE of the boys would even touch it ! ! ! And I remember listening to public radio about 12 or 15 years ago and the interview was about the fact that they were going to stop teaching children cursive writing. I just smirked at the radio and said that will NEVER happen. I don't need to tell you how that played out. And they are already realizing the great mistake that was. The brain reacts, evolves and develops when you have a thought, the signal goes down the arm, into the hand and to the pen, then paper. When I was in high school and college, when I studied and wanted to remember certain facts, I didn't just read it, I wrote them down and it embedded in my mind. YOU DON'T GET THAT FROM KEYBOARDING ! ! ! The point of all of that is that we have been moving away from all aspects of our HUMANITY at an accelerating speed for many decades. The GREAT SERVICE THAT YOU ARE DOING with this podcast is showing people how to RECONNECT ! ! ! And I must be clear too, I appreciate many of our modern conveniences. I love being able to go to the bathroom indoors and flush a toilet. I LOVE being able to have a cool home in the Summer. I'm in a wheelchair now and love that I have a motor I can clip onto my axel and zoom all over the city. We've made many missteps and had to make course corrections. The gasoline engine in tractors and plowing up thousands of acres of "Prairie Grasses" that had adapted to droughts with their 24" deep root systems. They plowed all that up and triggered the "Dust Bowl" in the 1930's and 40's. I heard a recording of a Franklin D. Roosevelt speech where he said "This isn't the wrath of God, this isn't the Locust coming, we did this - and we can fix it!" Now we've done it again and call it Climate Change. I could go on for hours on that alone. Here is the REALLY scary thing about that.... I have not found a person in their 20's and younger that know what the Dust Bowl is ! ! ! We don't teach our history anymore ! ! ! If we know where we came from, we know not to go down that path and find the better path. Same with a scientist that discovered massive lead contamination on a global scale. His discovery was an accident, he was trying to carbon date a meteorite and kept getting lead contamination. That discovery evolved into having to switch to "unleaded" gasoline. NOW we have "Micro Plastic" contamination on a global scale. "If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it." And again - I love "spell check". But I own books I hold in my hand when reading them. I LOVE that I was able to see your podcast on my computer in my living room. We just have to find a balance. I believe what you do is a reminder of where we came from and there are parts we need to cling to to preserve our humanity. Some may call what you do as entertaining. And I somewhat agree with that. BUT I believe what you are doing is a critical component to our survival as a human race. I've taken this on as my mission at this stage of my life to try and reconnect people - mainly the KIDS. My generation screwed up a lot of things and it's not fair to just dump the mess in the kids laps. I have a favorite saying. "We didn't inherit the earth from our parents, we borrowed it from our children." So - I'm sure you didn't expect a reply like this one. What do you think? I want to figure out some way to connect you and your podcast to kids. Since I've seen this video, I've looked at many others. A great author from the 1940's, James Baldwin, said "Children will seldom do what we tell them to, but they will always mimic us." I'd love to see kids experience the joy in exploring and learning how to mimic you.
I like to think your beautiful headstones confuse people because they are so stylized and unique in this era that they cannot believe they were made for someone who passed away in 2022. I cannot speak highly enough of your craftsmanship. It is simply stunning. Question- is your handwriting this beautiful or does your wife have to suffer through interpreting your grocery lists (like I do with mine!)?
My wife can read my 18th century inspired handwriting but it has taken 18 years! She still has a hard time at times. Thank you for your kind words
Beautifully done. The first thing I noticed was how the slate grabbed the light. I was wondering how durable of a material it is for a grave stone. Will it be legible in 100 years? The other thing I noticed is this fella has been gone for two years now so I'd better preorder to get mine before I need it! Thank you again for sharing your trade with us. It's so impressive.
Craig great questions! Believe it or not slate stones in New England from the 1650s are as crisp and sharp as the day they were carved! Yea it is an extremely durable material otherwise I wouldnt carve with it. Secondly many of who do this full time are on a one to 3 year backlog as their aren’t enough of us out there to meet the demand. So yes! Preorder or leave in your will what exactly you would like. That way you get the last word! lol
